DESIGNER NAME: Julia Thomas
SIGNATURES: “Modern femininity and asymmetry. Purity is an important aspect of my work. I am meticulous about the flow of each line and the influence it has on the silhouette.”
TRADEMARK PIECE: “My SS15 asymmetric black pump is a contemporary interpretation of the classic version. The continuation of the line from one foot to the other merges what are normally seen as two shapes into one.
THE COLLECTION: “The spring/summer 2015 collection is all about asymmetry and redefining the familiar perception of shoes. I started to explore this idea during my time at the Royal College of Art, wanting to cause a response within the mind: one in which the wearer and the observer challenge the notion of symmetry in footwear. The concept of repetition and its very disruption found in some Minimal Art had a strong influence on these ideas. My approach to design is also a natural appreciation of the human body itself, since it is asymmetric in every part.”
WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER YOUR GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT? “Winning the Manolo Blahnik award last year and meeting one of the most iconic shoe designers of our time. Receiving his recognition and praise for my work is a huge compliment.”
IF YOU COULD DRESS ANYONE, WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY? “My ideal client is a visionary of any age, who is forward thinking with a deep understanding of contemporary design and a conscious level of thought. She has a subtle confidence, pioneering spirit and a daring sense of style.”
