Creative Director Amy Powney joined Mother of Pearl in 2006, four years after the brand was founded by Maia Norman. An avid sportswoman and surfer from California, Maia focused the direction of the brand on technical sportswear as well as taking inspiration from the London art world in which she was immersed.

After working for the designers Marios Schwab and Giles Deacon, Powney began her career at the brand as a design intern. In 2011, she became Design Director and continued to develop prints with collaboration artists, which had become a seasonal feature of Mother of Pearl. In 2015, Norman appointed Powney Creative Director after she had spearheaded a period of sustained growth during which the business had gone from strength to strength.

Since 2015 Powney has developed the collections and prints independent of collaborations. She has grounded her designs with sportswear, as set out by Norman, whilst maintaining print as a central feature of the brand aesthetic and beginning to develop the collection through her own sensibility. Powney draws on references from her childhood in the North of England, and from the 80s, 90s and early 2000s; inspired by the strong natural femininity of the women who surrounded her whilst she was growing up, and the sportswear so prevalent throughout her teenage years. Along with these references Powney often looks to important social photographers, and fashion photography from the 80s and 90s to inform her design process.

Mother of Pearl presented their first collection at London Fashion Week for AW14. The brand has been shortlisted for the BFC Vogue Fashion Fund in 2015 and 2016.
